November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Every November, Canada comes together to shine a light on the realities of domestic violence, a public health crisis that affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Learn about Domestic Violence Month in Canada.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviours used by one person to gain power and control over another person with whom they have or previously had an intimate relationship.

Some Statistics:

  1. More than 4 in 10 women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence in their lifetime
  2. Approximately every 6 days, a woman is killed by her intimate partner

How can you get involved?

  1. Start Conversations – Talk about intimate partner violence and gender-based violence openly and compassionately. Sharing facts helps to break the stigma that keeps survivors silent.
  2. Learn and Reflect – Seek out resources, readings and videos that you can use to increase awareness around the lived experiences of survivors of intimate partner violence
  3. Support Survivor-Led Organizations – Connect with and learn from organizations and community-led efforts that are working to support intimate partner violence survivors
