Knowledge translation through the use of art can be very useful when exploring and communicating stigmatized topics including intimate partner violence (IPV).

In this study, women who experienced intimate partner violence while pregnant were asked to describe their experiences to researchers, which were then turned into poems and visual representations.

What are the findings?

Arts-based approaches can provide a bridge to narrow the gap that exists between researchers and people with lived experience by creating a safe space for people to feel comfortable sharing their stories. 

The use of art in research has been shown to provide a holistic approach, that helps to create empathy, challenging current biases, and opening up dialogue for survivors of intimate partner violence.
