Understanding Intimate Partner Violence

A Clinician’s Guide to Trauma-and Violence-Informed Care (TVIC)

When providing care to survivors of intimate partner and gender-based violence, providers, organizations and systems often lack the training and understanding of providing effective care. Learn about trauma-and violence informed care and key practices when working with survivors.

What is Trauma-and Violence-Informed Care (TVIC)?

Trauma-and Violence-Informed Care (TVIC) is an equity-oriented framework that recognizes the impact of multiple forms of violence on a person’s physical and mental health.

3 Key Practices for Clinicians when working with survivors of Intimate Partner Violence:

  1. Address Systemic Violence – Attend to policies and everyday practices within clinical settings that may perpetuate harm or re-traumatization, such as requiring repeated re-telling of traumatic experiences to access care
  2. Emphasize Survivor Control – Allow survivors control over their narratives, pace and decisions about sharing their experiences or seeking help
  3. Support Provider Well-Being – Recognize clinicians’ own risk for vicarious trauma, encouraging organizational support and reflective supervision
